There is a growing trend for people to pursue self-help at Law thanks to technology, increasing awareness and greater avenues for collaboration and mutual support. Importantly, however, is a deep distrust in formal institutions and paid professional representation be honest, just and not overly incentivised by profit and personal gain. Various reasons given for going the way of self-help, or if going to court self-representation as ‘pro-se’ or ‘pro-per’, include the following.

  • Perception of incompetence
  • Perception of self-interest over the interests of the client
  • Hear-say accounts of cases purposefully dragged on for extended billing with no acceptable outcome
  • Suspicion of colluding with counsel representing the other side
  • Suspicion the representative acts in ways to please the judge in a court matter
  • Limitations to remedies licensed attorneys, solicitors and counsel can utilise for clients
  • Limited jurisdiction in which licensed representatives can operate
  • Concerns the judiciary and legal profession is controlled by a nefarious secret society
  • Increasing numbers of people are waking up to the fact they must take responsibility for their legal affairs and matters at law, just as taking care of one’s health is vital.
